Insect Sprays You Can Prepare At Home

It requires a lot of time and energy to grow your plants, but you might end up getting frustrated due to the insect attack on your garden. Sure, you can consider using pesticides, but they are usually quite toxic. That is why you may need to keep them out of your survival gear list.

The best way to deal with insects is to use DIY insect sprays. The best thing about these sprays is that they can be prepared using natural items at your home. These sprays will kill harmful insects without causing damage to your priceless homegrown plants.

These sprays are pretty easy to make. The recipes to make these sprays are simpler than you think.

Olive oil and pure soap

Working with this recipe will need you to get olive oil or any other cooking oil and pure soap. Pure soap refers to the one that doesn’t contain any synthetic ingredients such as de-greasers, moisturizers, detergents, or bleach.

Add two tablespoons of cooking oil and five tablespoons of soap to one gallon of water. This recipe is quite effective due to the ability of the oil to stick to plant leaves for longer durations.

Water and pure soap

This recipe is quite similar to the one mentioned above. However, it is a little less intense compared to that, and it may be more suitable for sensitive plants, such as lettuce.

To prepare this solution, you will need to add 2.5 tablespoons of pure soap to one gallon of water. Avoid using oil this time. This solution will kill pests without harming your sensitive plants.

Tobacco and water

This recipe may sound a bit strange due to the tobacco content it uses. The nicotine of tobacco is absorbed by plants when you use this solution. It kills pests when they consume part of those plants.

However, you will have to be careful not to use this spray when your edible plants are fully grown. Using it in the early stages of plant growth allows nicotine to leave the plant before you consume its fruits.

To prepare this spray, you will need to put one cup of tobacco in one gallon of water. Boil this solution for 30 minutes and let it cool. If you want this solution to be a bit stronger, you can add pure soap to it.

Orange peels

If you are worried due to the ant problem, you can consider using orange peels. Peel two or three oranges and save their peels. Put these peels in a blender, add some water, and blend it for a few minutes until a fine liquid is prepared. Pour this liquid into any ant hills in your home.

Garlic, onion, and chili spray

Although this spray can be a bit smelly, it can be the most effective one on this list. First, grind one onion and a garlic bulb. Add a tablespoon of chili pepper powder. Stir this mixture in a half-gallon of hot water. After stirring, strain out all the chunks and add a tablespoon of pure soap. It should repel the insect attack quite effectively.
